The Western International Junior Hockey League is excited to announce that we will use video review beginning with our exhibition season.
WIJHL officials will be able to review all major penalties where a player would be ejected from the game.
Following a review, officials may confirm the on-ice call, elevate the penalty to a Match Penalty, reduce the call so the player is not ejected, or rescind the penalty altogether.
“Building on the WIJHL’s commitment to providing a professional standard of competition, this is another step towards aligning the WIJHL with higher levels their players aspire to reach,” said Brad Lazarowich, BCHL Director of Officiating & Player Safety. “This gives our officials another tool to help ensure the correct call is made on the ice.”
Video review can also be used for potential goals, including whether the puck entered the net, whether it entered as the result of an illegal play, goaltender interference, or the net being knocked off its moorings.
“As an independent league, we have the autonomy to explore how technology can support our officials and uphold the integrity of the game,” said Frank Guill, WIJHL Director of Broadcasting & Digital Media.
